Community service can be a fun and easy way to make a
contribution to society.
There is a wide range of different types of services you can
choose from that might work best for you.
We should try our best to make this world a better place for
us to live in.

Last summer, I volunteered for a week at a camp called The Rock Project. It was located in Northern Philadelphia. There were kids from all over that area. This camp was open to children from ages 3-14. The Rock Project opened my eyes to how much people there are out there that can use a bit of help. Because of this camp, I developed a passion for volunteering and performing community service. After this event, I got more involved in community service and started doing more and more volunteer work.
Community Service is any type of service that benefits society. Many times it effects a small part of the community but sometimes it can make a huge impact at a bigger scale. Community service is usually a selfless act where people do them not for self gain or self glory but for the greater good of the people. There are many different kinds of community services. It&#x2019;s hard to organize and categorize certain acts as community service because there is such a wide range of them.

There are many camps that people can volunteer at in this part of Pennsylvania. There are many in Philadelphia that are run in the summer. Camps can run for a couple of days or up to a couple of weeks. These are great for people that love kids and want to interact with them over a longer period of time. I personally enjoy volunteering at camps. There are cleanups. Many times cleanups are affiliated with churches that organize them. Soup kitchens are a great way to help people that are really in need. There are millions of people who cannot provide food for themselves or their families so people set up soup kitchens to feed them. You can often find opportunities to volunteer at local fire departments and hospitals. Even donations can be considered as community service. Donations are a great way to help fund other people doing community service.

One reason why people do community service is often because of altruism. Altruism is the selfless concern for the welfare of others. There are so many people whose situation is terrible and it is often not their faults. People participate in community service to help them out. People often feel that their volunteering helps make a big impact in many people&#x2019;s lives and it gives them joy.

Another reason people might do community service is as a punishment. People convicted of crimes may want an alternative to going to prison. They are given the opportunity to complete a certain number of community service in order to not go to jail. People may also do community service as an alternative to paying a fine or fee. When people go to court, there are fees and penalties that they may have to pay. They can choose to complete a certain number of hours of community service to reduce that payment.

In year 2000, 7.3 million students in 11th through 12th grade did some kind of community service. Now, 63.4 million or about 26.8% of people in the United States participate in some kind of volunteer community service at one point in their lives.
24.4% of those 63.4 million are between the ages of 16-24. The number of young volunteers are dropping. Less and less students are getting involved in community service each year. However, there are over 2 times as many volunteers in schools that require community service.

When people do community service, their actions can have great impacts on people all around them. The community can benefit from community service in many ways but they are not the only ones who are affected. The people who volunteer receive a lot of benefits as well as the community.
Community service can benefit the community in so many different ways. It can make cleaner communities. When communities are cleaner, people are more willing to go outside more, visit local parks, etc. People who are hungry can be fed through certain community services. There are so many people in the city who are starving everyday. When people open soup kitchens and other food providing services, it literally saves lives. Through community services, people are united. Events such as The Rock Project and the Christmas banquet can bring people together that would have never met each other before. People who lives 2 doors away from each other may have never even seen each other&#x2019;s faces before. Events may introduce people to each other and create friendships that may never have happened. Community services also bring opportunities to families. There are things that families may never have the chance to do or have. Things that some people may take for granted. Things like Thanksgiving dinner or Christmas parties. Opportunities like those can help rebuild broken families and experience things they never could have before.

People who do community service have the opportunity to learn new skills that may be useful in the future. For example, when I volunteered at Camp Rock Project, I learned many things such as interacting with new people, caring for kids, being patient, etc. Community service is a great way to meet new people. You can make so many new friends through volunteering. Friends with other volunteers or friends with people you meet along the way. Many times, people experience new things and understand things they wouldn&#x2019;t have if they didn&#x2019;t do community service. Such as, people in intercity Philadelphia. After getting to meet them personally, I was able to understand them better and see through their point-of-view. When people do community service, the feeling they receive from it is often times the reason they do it in the first place. The satisfaction of knowing you did something great for society feels really good and really lifts you up. Community service or any volunteer work is really good for colleges. Universities like that you care for more than yourself and that you are able to work with other people for the good of the people.

There are many different places where you can get involved in community service. Even at our school we have a club called the Octagon club and it&#x2019;s sole purpose is to get students involved in community service and to help out people in the area. There are also many food drives, clothes drive, etc that happen at school. Even buying shirts and other accessories that try to raise money for charities or for people in need can be a type of community service. There are a lot of religions that believe in doing good for other people. Christianity, Judaism, Catholicism, Islam, Hinduism, Confucianism, and Buddhism are just a few examples. Churches often have many schedules community service activities throughout the year and are willing to let people help out with them. Township buildings or centers often have different programs or activities that people can go to and do some community service. You can also volunteer at local hospitals or animal shelters if they are looking for help. There are also many sites you can find online such as www.citizencorps.gov and www.getinvolved.gov.

One of the main places I get involved with community service is at The Church of the Advocate. The church was built in 1897. It is located on Diamond Street, Philadelphia. The leaders of the church currently are Father Rector Miller, Pastor Tae Ho and many other behind the scenes faculty members. They both are very heavily involved in the community and spends all their time, effort and money trying to make it a greater place. The church always supported the community. The church became a center for the Civil Rights Movement and supported African-American and women&#x2019;s rights.

Washington Wonderkids and Whiz Kids are academic programs for students to help the learn how to study and focus on school work. A big percentage of high school students drop out so these programs are trying to set kids on the right path. The soup kitchen has been running for over 25 years. It feeds over 150 people each day! It is organized by two volunteers,Pauline Holland and James Rhinehart. G.A.P.S. stands for Grands as Parents. There are many kids in the area whose parents are in some kind of trouble or are not fit to be parents and often their grandparents are the ones who raise them. The church just supports this and offers help and activities for them. Narcotics Anonymous is a program that helps people who are addicted to narcotics learn how to live narcotic-free. The Emergency Food and Formula Program helps provide food and baby formula for people who are in need of food urgently.

Washington Wonderkids is a preschool program for children aged 3 to 5. Whiz Kids is offered daily for elementary school children between the ages of 5 and 13 &#x2013; after school throughout the school year and all day during the summer.&#xA0;The program recruits from neighboring schools, Child Care Information Services (CCIS) and within the community. The program seeks out students who can benefit from the knowledge, skills, experience and extra attention offered to them.&#xA0;

These are just a few examples of people who has dedicated a lot of their time for charity and people in need. Some of these people dedicated their lives for the sake of others. These people helped change the world through their acts of kindness and their love for other people. They helped bring acknowledgement to issues that people wouldn&#x2019;t have even cared about if it wasn&#x2019;t for them.

Mother Teresa (Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu) is a well known advocate of charity work and community service. She dedicated her life to the welfare of others. Mother Teresa was born on August 27, 1910 and died on September 5, 1997. She is of Albanian decent but she did most of her ministry in India where she has her citizenship. She set up homes for abandoned children, leper colonies, soup kitchens, and many other charitable institutions. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.

Nelson Mandela was a man who made a huge impact in Southern Africa. He fought for the rights of the people in South Africa. He organized demonstrations and protested the domination of white power. All he wanted was peace for his people in their own land. He was convicted and jailed in November 1962. He was sentenced to life while in jail. After 28 long years, he was released from prison. He was elected president of South Africa and he still lives today fighting for peace and freedom.

Diana Frances Spencer was born to a noble English family. She married the prince of Wales and became the Princess of Wales. She did many things for other people. She cleaned a lot and worked as a cleaning woman. She was also a teacher&#x2019;s aide who helped teachers and students in schools. She wanted more ways to help people in need so she did a lot of charities and took part in raising a lot of money for different charities. She also helped out in different hospitals. She died on August 31, 1997 in an automobile accident.

Reverend Tae Hoo Lee was born on April 15, 1972. He was raised in Korea until he was 19. He moved to the United States in 1991. He became a pastor at age 26 and was very involved in the community. He started the Rock Project in 2005, which became a huge success. After doing that for 5 years he wanted to do more for the people in the city. He started a program called Washington Wonderkids and Whiz Kids.

Some Community Services that I personally did was the Camp Rock Project, the Christmas banquet, the turkey drive, Norristown cleanup, and Antioch Summer Academy. For the Christmas banquet, the Church of the Advocate got together and provided a nice meal and presents for the people living in the area. We provided turkey baskets for people who couldn&#x2019;t afford turkey&#x2019;s on Thanksgiving. My church, Antioch Church, organized a clean-up in Norristown and helped clean out a park. I also helped teach kindergardeners English and Math at a Summer Academy held in my church.
Camp Rock Project is one a the more bigger community services that I was able to be a part of. It is one of the reasons why I chose to do community service as my topic. It basically is a free camp in Uber Street, Philadelphia. It&#x2019;s held by the Church of the Advocate right near Uber Street. It&#x2019;s a 5 week long camp and kids of ages 3-14 are welcome to come. The camp is fun and exciting. Camp Rock Project is very physically draining because all the kids jump at you, hit you, and mess around with you all the time. They are very wild, energetic, and frankly violent but they are very sweet kids and are so fun to be with. This camp is great for local kids because it breaks kids of the cycles they live in. Most kids end up dropping out of school, doing drugs, become violent, etc, but the camp helps steer kids away from that path of life and give them a chance that they never really had.
Staffs and volunteers from all over the country come to Philadelphia to help out with this camp. Staffs help out for the whole 5 weeks but the volunteers only help for a week. The camp runs from 9:30 to 3:00 but the faculty starts preparing since early in the morning. When the kids arrive we start off with worship songs where we sing and dance. Then, since the camp is hosted by church, Pastor Tae Ho gives a short sermon. There are kids from all age groups so we split them up according to their ages. 3-5, 6-7, 8-9, and 10-11.
Kids split up into different ages. Last year I worked with 3-5 year olds. We started off with dancing. Dance teachers taught us different dances. Arts and crafts was the kids&#x2019; favorite part of the day. Each day they would make new crafts or do different art activities. The younger kids really loved it. They had gym and game time also. They got to run around and play games. This was good for the teachers because this really drained kids of energy and after this the kids were more mellow. One of the pastors at the Church of the Advocate teaches the kids Black History. Creative/performing arts is teaching how to be creative and how to perform. This includes math, English etc.
The Christmas Party was a banquet that we held for people in Philadelphia. There were about 250 people in total ranging from little babies to the elderly. We served a full Christmas meal, so we prepared, cooked, served, and cleaned up. After the dinner was over, we presented kids with little gifts. This was my favorite part of the party. Many kids don&#x2019;t have the opportunity to celebrate Christmas as eccentrically as many of us do so it was really amazing to give them the opportunity to do so. During the whole party, there was a band that was playing on stage. People were singing along and kids were dancing. It was a great time.
These pictures are of us setting up. We arrived at the banquet location about 2 hours earlier than party began. We had to start setting up chairs, tables, the stage, presents and dinner. Everything was set up in the gym which was completely empty when we arrived.
These pictures are of the actual party. The waiters are serving food while the people that came from all over the town start to eat and listen to a live band. Each waiter is issued 1 or 2 tables which they must care for and provide everything they need. There is also a big bonfire outside that people can talk and mingle around. We also hand out gifts to all the children at the banquet.
After everybody finished eating and gone home we started cleaning up. We cleared out all the food, plates, utensils, chairs and tables. We stored all of the left over presents which we can use for other occasions. We moped up the floor and started taking apart the stage. After we finished we celebrated and discussed what happened.
I want to become a math teacher. I love math and want to help people who aren&#x2019;t good at math. I want to use my open summers for volunteering. I will help run the Rock Project and go to missions and stuff like that. I hope that I can incorporate community service and volunteering into my future as much as possible.
